Behind the Scenes at the Control Centre of Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich

What does it take to keep over 400 trams and buses running smoothly through a bustling city like Zurich? Traila had the opportunity to find out during an insightful exchange at the control centre of Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ), the city’s central hub for public transport coordination.

Organised by the Industrie Verband Zürich, the event offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the operations that keep Zurich’s mobility heartbeat steady. Zurich City Councillor Michael Baumer opened the session by emphasising the critical role of the Control Centre as the central command point of the city’s public transport infrastructure. Mario Schmid, Head of the VBZ Control Centre, shared eye-opening facts: a dedicated team of just 24 professionals works in shifts to monitor and manage over 96,000 interventions per year, from route blockages to lost items, ensuring disruptions are addressed before the public even notices.

For Traila, it was a valuable opportunity to learn how real-time coordination, infrastructure design and traffic signal prioritisation come together at VBZ to make its system one of the most efficient in Europe. This kind of hands-on understanding is what shapes our technology development, ensuring that future rail solutions respond to the real challenges faced by operators.
