Behind the Scenes at the Control Center of Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich
February 2025

What does it take to keep over 400 trams and buses running smoothly through a bustling city like Zurich? Traila had the opportunity to find out during an insightful exchange at the control center of Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ), the city’s central hub for public transport coordination.
Organized by the Industrie Verband Zürich, the event offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the operations that keep Zurich’s mobility heartbeat steady. Zurich City Councillor Michael Baumer opened the session by emphasizing the critical role of the Control Center as the central command point of the city’s public transport infrastructure. Mario Schmid, Head of the VBZ Control Center, shared eye-opening facts: a dedicated team of just 24 professionals works in shifts to monitor and manage over 96,000 interventions per year, from route blockages to lost items, ensuring disruptions are addressed before the public even notices.
For Traila, it was a valuable opportunity to learn how real-time coordination, infrastructure design and traffic signal prioritisation come together at VBZ to make its system one of the most efficient in Europe. This kind of hands-on understanding is what shapes our technology development, ensuring that future rail solutions respond to the real challenges faced by operators.
A big thank you to Michael Baumer for the open exchange, to Mario Schmid for the operational insights, and to Isabel Mathys and Patrik Meli for organizing this exceptional visit. At Traila, we’re convinced: it takes seamless collaboration, skilled teams, and smart systems to make urban rail systems more efficient, affordable, and sustainable.
